You can install the Business Internet dialup software on a computer that has access to a Local Area Network (LAN). (This can include a desktop computer that is permanently connected to a LAN, or a laptop that is sometimes connected to an office network.) However, due to the complexity of LAN configurations, Member Services cannot provide technical support for such connections.
These instructions can be used to configure the Business Internet software on a computer that has access to a LAN. Before implementing these instructions, we strongly recommend that you show them to your LAN administrator, since LAN configurations vary widely, and these instructions might not apply in all cases.
These instructions are limited to configuring a Windows 95 computer, which has access to a LAN, to connect to the Business Internet service via a physical internal or external modem.
Please confer with your LAN administrator before implementing
these instructions.
To configure your Windows 95 TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter to establish a modem connection to Business Internet in addition to your LAN connection, follow these
instructions:
- Click
, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network icon, select TCP/IP->Dial-Up
Adapter in the list (you might have to scroll to see it),
then click the Properties button.
- Click the DNS Configuration tab.
- Write down all the numbers in the DNS Server Search Order, then click the radio button next to Disable DNS.
- Click OK, and then OK.
- Restart your computer.
- Install the Business Internet software as directed in the Getting Started User's Guide.
- After you have set up your new account and disconnected from the registration server,
click
, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network icon, select TCP/IP->Dial-Up
Adapter in the list (you might have to scroll to see it),
and then click the Properties button.
- Click the DNS Configuration tab.
- Click the radio button next to Enable DNS.
- Windows 95 is limited to three DNS server addresses. You need
at least one to connect to the Business Internet service.
Therefore, you can have a maximum of two DNS addresses for your LAN connection.
Enter up to two of the DNS server addresses you removed earlier when you clicked "disable DNS" in step 4. (Confer
with your LAN administrator to determine which one(s) you need.) Click Add after entering each address.
See Business Internet
Service Provider Setup information for the DNS server addresses corresponding to your
Dial-Up area. Type the appropriate
Primary DNS server address for your Business Internet Dial-Up connection, then click Add. Do
the same for the Secondary DNS server address if you still have fewer than three
addresses in the DNS Server Search Order field.
- Click OK and then OK.
- Restart your computer.
- Follow the instructions for Connecting to the Internet in the Getting Started User's
Guide.
